In February 2018 the Naomh Éanna U8 Hurlers once again took part in the prestigious Central Restaurant North Antrim Hurling league, a tournament well renowned for the speed of play in indoor venues with matches played 5-a-side over 5 minutes.

With a panel of 24, the league commenced with 3 Naomh Éanna teams competing in St Patrick’s College, Ballymena. Na hÉanna Óga soon got used to the speed of play and the sliotar rebounding off walls and posts and settled into their natural roles from indoor training sessions at Edmund Rice.

The following weekend the teams were competing with the best of Counties Derry, Antrim and Tyrone in Division 2, 3 and 4 at host venues St James’ College Coleraine, Cross and Passion Ballycastle and St Patrick’s Ballymena. The boys toughed it out with some fantastic hurling and dogged determination and were well rewarded with ice cream for their efforts.

The Coleraine squad topped their group jointly with Naomh Pádraig after a thrilling 3-3 draw. That left both teams to do it all again at the Seven Towers Leisure Centre on Finals Day, 18th February.

After a brief poc-about at the club, the Glengormley Gaels hit the road for Ballymena. A packed and buzzing venue greeted them and the boys took to a sideline warm up to shake the nerves that were creeping in. The Division 6 and 5 finals played out in the background with the cheers and shouts echoing in the hall. After a team huddle and water break the boys marched on to the pitch with chests puffed and hurls held tightly as they lined out. 14 minutes and 5 strong hurlers from Naomh Pádraig stood between them and their first taste of U8 Silverware. A tight first 5 minutes saw the sliotar travel back and forward as neither side could break tough defensive set ups. A Naomh Éanna penalty in the 5th minute put the first mark on the score sheet with Seán Cunningham burying it from the 13 metre line. The floodgates opened and Naomh Éanna chalked up another 3 goals in the last minutes of the first half. With nerves settled they took the second half by storm and with a further 5 goals from Seán Ryan, Caodhán Quinn, Seán Cunningham and captain Frankie McCandless...
