A second win in a row for the Gleann Ghormlaithe men at the beautiful surroundings of Glenshesk, as the visiting team made their way from Glengormley to the Glenshesk Basin.

Glen rovers have managed to stay in division two, on the last day of the league they escaped the drop to division three last year. They are a tough resilient side, remembering the preliminary round of the Championship, Glen Rovers saw bat agus Bóthar from Naomh Éanna in their early exit from the Championship.

On Sunday 30th July at 3pm these teams lined out at the Whitehill Pitch at Tír na nÓg. Rovers were beaten by Naomh Éanna in an excellent match in the preliminary round of the intermediate championship.  The game was played in difficult conditions, however despite the weather the quality of the Naomh Éanna side showed and at the end the final score was a fair result.

Naomh Éanna travelled to Armoy, to play in the Glenshesk basin, this had been the scene of bitter disappointment for na Fhir Éanna, two years ago, when the Intermediate Hurling Final of 2016 was played in near perfect conditions at the Glenshesk Pitches on Saturday 17th September.  Naomh Éanna should have won on that day, however a puck of the ball (or two actually) allowed Naomh Bríd to progress to the Ulster stages.

With the threat of rain and the wind already blowing across the pitch both teams to took to the pitch, Colm Cunning from Dunloy was the official in charge of proceedings and as the home side won the toss, they opted to play against the wind in the first half, possibly a decision they may regret after the result.

Both teams went at it hammer and thongs and the gap at the end showed how little there was between the teams, from start to half-time and from the return to the finish only a single score separated the teams.

Glen Rovers used the wind really well and with the accuracy No.10 at right half forward, finishing the match with eight points.

Naomh Éanna was first to set the scoreboard in motion, 1st blood to Naomh Éanna (NÉ 0.01, GR 0.00), the first attack from Glen Rovers resulted in a first wide and handing the impetus to the visitors, two minutes played.

Frees would prove crucial for Glen Rovers as scored frees helped the home side stay in touch, The big No.10 levelled the score  (NÉ 0.02, GR 0.02). In the seventh minute Rovers would take the lead for the first time, this time the man on the square scored from play (NÉ 0.02, GR 0.03).

Ruairí Crummey was causing headaches for the home team and won another free that allowed Cormac Jennings to increase the score, increase he did as the result was a goal from the wonderfully talented hurler to stretch the visitors lead to five points  (NÉ 1.05, GR 0.03). Glen Rovers won another free on the attacking 45m line and the conversion kept the home in touching distance, who but for the accuracy of the free taker the home side looked unsettled and could have been in danger of losing touch, free in the eighteenth minute brought the score, (NÉ 1.05, GR 0.04). Two minutes later Killian Jennings won a free and ever reliable Cormac Jennings slotted over,  (NÉ 1.06, GR 0.04), more frees and a goal after good pressure seen the home side rewarded with a level scores (NÉ 1.06, GR 1.06), twenty three minutes played.

On twenty minutes played the response from Naomh Éanna was clever interplay and a point to push ahead once more, (NÉ 1.07, GR 1.06).

The wind had an effect on general also scores converted and chances missed, the game saw defences on top and forward pressed for space and time, the compressed pitch did see the middle third area congested.

The home side used this to their advantage as half time approached they drew level and went in front at the whistle from Colum Cunning.

Half-time came too early for the home side as they were in control and had settled and found their groove, leading by a point the referee called the first half to an end and both teams headed for the dressing room, (NÉ 1.07, GR 1.08).

Half-Time Score at Páirc Glenshesk

Naomh Éanna – 1.7

Naomh Bríd – 1.8

Overall this game was a fiery affair with plenty of hard fought possession and tough tackles. The second half began as the first ended, the home side was desperate to hold on to the slim lead, but with an attack from Naomh Éanna allowed Eoin Conlon to receive a passed from Cormac Ross, whose work rate and fielding gave Naomh Éanna a great platform for attacking the home goal, (NÉ 1.08, GR 1.08). Pressure from Glen Rovers was on the increase and on thirty nine minutes played Glen Rovers won a 65m and again the accuracy from free was deadly accurate, (NÉ 1.08, GR 1.09). The play was going to be tit for tat all the way to the end with no daylight between either team.

Naomh Éanna got the penultimate score  (NÉ 1.17, GR 2.12) and Glen Rovers added another and final point to bring the match to an end,  (NÉ 1.17, GR 2.13).

Final Score at Páirc Glenshesk

Naomh Éanna – 1.17

Naomh Bríd – 2.13

Next match is against Tír na nÓg at home in Páirc Éanna. Tír na nÓg are coming into the next game after a long break and a defeat at home to MacUilíns Ballycastle, whereas Naomh Éanna are playing om the back of two wins. A constant in division two, Tír na nÓg will be up for a match at the home ground of one of their nearest neighbours this has the appearance of the round five matches. No doubt, Naomh Éanna will be equal to the task as this game will define the season for both teams.
