U21 football championship Semi final
Naomh Eoin 1-13 v Naomh Eanna 0-03
Saturday 22nd November 2014 - report by Michael Scott
Naomh Éanna made one change to their starting 15, bringing in minor full back Kevin Hillen for the injured Tiernan Curran. Positional changes also included moving Cormac Eastwood from half back to half forward and moving Peter Healy from full back to wing half back.

The game started on time and both teams lined out with both defences packed with extra bodies marking space. In a game more akin to chess, scoring opportunities were few and far between. Over the first 20 minutes of play both teams were level on 2 points each. The teams were struggling to penetrate each others defence. Just before half time Naomh Eoin made the break through and went into the break leading by 2 on a scoreline of 4 to 2.

After the break Naomh Éanna made a tactical decision and pushed an extra man forward to play with a 3 man full-forward line. This change had an immediate impact with an early score coming from Aodhran Eastwood. The same player then had an opportunity to level the game with a 20metre free but unfortunately it went to the wrong side of the post.

This seemed to wake Naomh Eoin up. With 10 minutes gone and not having scored in the 2nd half, Naomh Eoin ripped into Naomh Éanna. They scored 4 points in as many minutes and things were looking bleak for the Hightown boys. The manger decided to freshen things up and Donal Walsh entered the fray with 15 minutes to go. A minute later Donal walked off the pitch with a red card after sharing pleasantries with the match official.

Naomh Éanna were already struggling to contain the rampant Naomh Eoin forward line, but with a man down the situation went from bad to worse. Another 5 unanswered points put Naomh Eoin 10 ahead and the game was effectively over. A goal in the last 5 minutes completed the scoring and St Johns ran out convincing winners on a score line of 1.13 to 0.03.

No doubt Naomh Éanna will learn from this. Of the starting 15 only one player is unavailable next year. Eleven minors started the game and hopefully after playing in this game they can fully appreciate what they need to do if they wish to get to the next level.

Naomh Éanna team was – C Losty, F Eastwood, K Hillen, D McNulty, N Heatley, R kennedy, P Healy, C Scott (0.1f), J Maskey, C Eastwood, J McAuley, K Healy, A Eastwood (0.2f), R Gillan, C Little. Subs D Walsh, M Morgan, T Curran.

U21 football championship Quarter final
Naomh Séamas 2-04 v Naomh Eanna 2-11

Saturday 15th November 2014 - report by Michael Scott
Naomh Séamus – Aldergrove entertained Naomh Éanna on Saturday afternoon in the quarter final of the under 21 football championship. The pundits had tipped Naomh Séamus – Aldergrove as favourites given their senior division one status and given the fact that most of their starting 15 had experienced division 1 and senior championship this season. Naomh Éanna on the other hand included 10 minors in their starting 15.

Naomh Séamus had obviously read the script and started strongly. They scored 2 early points and Naomh Éanna were struggling to keep up with McGarry, Browning, Brazier and Hanna in the Naomh Séamus forward line. It took 12 minutes before Naomh Éanna registered their first score with a close in free from Aodhran Eastwood. Naomh Séamus added another point shortly after to lead 3 point to 1. At this stage Naomh Séamus should really have been much further ahead. Their cause wasn’t helped with an injury to their lively corner forward Browning who was causing the Naomh Éanna defence all sorts of problems. Naomh Éanna took their opportunity at this point and at half time both teams were all square at 4 points a piece.

Naomh Séamus came out after the half time break with a new determination. Within minutes of the restart they scored a super goal by Seamus McGarry . Not to be out done Naomh Éanna raced up the field and scored an equally as good a goal by Kristan Healy. Things then settled down and both teams teased each other with some nice support play but with no end product. Entering the last quarter, Naomh Éanna appeared to make a break through, points from Rian Gillan and Kristan Healy put the Hightown boys 2 in front. Then disaster struck when Naomh Séamus were awarded a penalty which McGarry planted into the top corner of the net. To their credit Naomh Éanna did not panic, they continued to play football and were awarded a free with 5 minutes to go which Aodhran Eastwood dispatched over the bar to level the game. Another 5 minutes of play before the final whistle but both teams were unable to register a winning score.

Extra time started and Naomh Séamus were struggling with the pace of the game. Naomh Éanna were moving the ball at pace from side to side looking for the killer pass. 3 unanswered points from Scott and Eastwood put Naomh Éanna 3 ahead at the end of the first period of extra time. In the second period of extra time Donal Walsh killed the game off with a superb goal, chipping the keeper from 25 metres. This killed the game off as a contest and in the last minute Ruairi Scott put the cherry on the cake with a free to complete the scoring. Final score 2.11 to 2.04.
This Saturday Naomh Éanna play Naomh Eoin (St Johns) in the semi final, throw in 2pm in Lamh Dhearg Hannastown.

The team was – C Losty, D McNulty, P Healy, F Eastwood, N Heatley (0.1), R Kennedy, C Eastwood, R Scott (0.2, 1f), J Maskey, C Little, J McAuley, K Healy (1.02), T Curran, R Gillan (0.1), A Eastwood (4f) subs D Walsh (1.1), D MacElhatton, C Thompson, M Morgan.

SLAINTE IS TAINTE: HEALTH IS WEALTH

On Saturday 9th November four delegates from Naomh Eanna CLG joined 300 GAA members from across the province for the Ulster GAA/ Irish News 'Slainte is Tainte' Conference. In line with the recent directive which comes into force in January, clubs nationwide are being asked to put health and wellbeing on a more formal platform by appointing a dedicated officer with responsibility for this issue.

Guest Speakers included Dr Conor McClean from the Ulster University, Caral Ni Cuilin, Minister for the Dept. of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Dr Eddie Rooney from the Public Health Agency and Oisin McConville Armagh player and manager of Crossmaglen Rangers.

There were several workshops throughout the day which included "coping with crisis", "addressing addiction","from playing well to staying well" "heads up- mental health" and "Mol an Oige". These proved to be both extremely informative and enjoyable with speakers at the workshops including the lovely Jarlath Burns, county players Niall McNamee and Alan O'Mara and Colm Keenan from Victim Support. There were also speakers from the Samaritans, Cancer Focus NI and the GPA.

A surprise speaker was Kevin McCloy, Derry player, who as you may remember had a cardiac arrest during a match at Owenbeg, during the summer. Kevin was there as an ambassador of the Cormac Trust, (set up in memory of the late Cormac MacAnallen) who actively campaign for the provision and proper maintenance of defibrillators at all pitches. His presentation was a poignant reminder of how they can be literally lifesaving!! However he did make it clear that there was no point a club having a defib, if it wasn't maintained properly and if club members weren't trained to use it. His message couldn't have been clearer, and it behoves all clubs to take this on board.

Without doubt, the most impressive speech of the day came in the afternoon from Armagh star, Oisin McConville who with blistering honesty told off his struggle with a gambling addiction. He outlined in stark detail how when he started off gambling (at age 14),he fell in love with gambling but that it ended up controlling him. He went as far as admitting that even when his father died, all he could think about was gambling. He stated that " Gaelic Football kept me alive, training & matches were the only places that I felt comfortable" He emphasized the importance of asking for help, and praised Ulster GAA for the lead they were taking on dealing with issues pertaining to health and wellbeing, a fact that had been previously been made by Dr Eddie Rooney from the Public Health Authority.

All in all an extremely enlightening, enjoyable and educational day, not least with the words of Dr Conor McClean ringing in our ears that exercise can counter the negative effect of the good old Ulster Fry!! He told us even with our u6s we were doing great things, teaching them the fundamental principles of movement (I knew we were doing something right!!) and that it was never too early or late to start!!
