Safeguarding Children – advice and guidance for coaches

February 6, 2018

A chairde,

As the beginning of a new season has dawned I take this opportunity to remind all coaches and volunteers of some best practice guidelines in terms of safeguarding. Relevant Access NI checks are absolutely compulsory for all adults who are assisting as a club representative, in any manner to work with children and young people. There is no flexibility or exception to this element of our safeguarding practice, all adults must be compliant by completing the relevant checks.

The process should be initiated online and followed through by submission of application and relevant ID documents to the club officer, Maighréad Ní Chonghaile for verification. I encourage everyone and in particular any new coaches/volunteers to get in touch for further information at 07799718638 – as or when child protection and/or coaching skills training arises, it is encouraged that coaches sign up.

It is self explanatory that no coach, trainer or mentor should be unaccompanied when working with our young people, in order to protect the children and ourselves. It is imperative that:

  • coaches work in pairs as far as possible,
  • photography is limited only to that which has previously been agreed with parents,
  • entry to changing rooms on an individual basis is prohibited;
  • transporting children between venues on an individual basis is prohibited; and
  • social media contact with minors is prohibited, this includes whats app and/or text messages.

A fully comprehensive Code of Conduct is currently being reviewed and will be rolled out in coming weeks but I ask in the meantime that all adults do their own bit in helping to make Naomh Éanna a safe environment for all of our users.

Is mise le meas,

Maighréad Ní Chonghaile
